Este estudo visa contribuir para a reflexão sobre a produção dos manuais escolares, na medida em que se articula em torno da interrogação: o que é um manual escolar? Examina um gênero textual específico – a coleção de livros configurada como biblioteca popular –, procurando apreender as suas características e os modos como se estrutura, bem como as formas pelas quais procura constituir e interpelar um público em especial, o público escolar. Com vistas a analisar os modos como se escolariza um determinado objeto cultural, toma-se como fonte e objeto de investigação a Bibliotheca Popular de Hygiene: a saude para todos, coleção composta por 22 títulos de autoria do médico Sebastião Barroso, publicada pela Melhoramentos na década de 1930. Destinada inicialmente a um público amplo, representado como “popular”, a coleção de pequenos livros sobre temáticas ligadas à higiene e à saúde se converte em obra didática, incorporando, entre outros elementos, um apêndice de autoria de Lourenço Filho, por intermédio do qual o educador busca orientar o trabalho cotidiano dos professores, com base nos princípios da Escola Nova. No exame das questões levantadas, atentou-se para o caráter “popular” de que se investiu a coleção, num primeiro momento, e para os deslocamentos operados com vistas a endereçá-la ao público escolar. Numa outra dimensão, buscou-se rearticular a coleção às figuras do autor e do editor, além de identificar indícios do trabalho de mediação editorial.

Retention and Resistance: Writing Instruction and Students Who Leave

Abstract: Retention and Resistance combines personal student narratives with a critical analysis of the current approach to retention in colleges and universities, and explores how retention can inform a revision of goals for first-year writing teachers.

Retention is a vital issue for institutions, but as these students’ stories show, leaving college is often the result of complex and idiosyncratic individual situations that make institutional efforts difficult and ultimately ineffective. An adjustment of institutional and pedagogical objectives is needed to refocus on educating as many students as possible, including those who might leave before graduation.

Much of the pedagogy, curricula, and methodologies of composition studies assume students are preparing for further academic study. Retention and Resistance argues for a new kairotic pedagogy that moves toward an emphasis on the present classroom experience and takes students’ varied experiences into account. Infusing the discourse of retention with three individual student voices, Powell explores the obligation of faculty to participate in designing an institution that educates all students, no matter where they are in their educational journey or how far that journey will go.

Abstract: "Talent development" is a phrase often used in reference to the education of gifted children. Recently, it has been presented by researchers to refer to a specific approach to the delivery of gifted education services. Much of this discussion has been at the conceptual level, and there is a need for translation of the model into concrete practices and examples that enable educators to better serve gifted children within their schools and districts. This book addresses that need. The research behind the talent development framework is briefly reviewed, followed by practical implications for identification and program design within domains of talent. To illustrate successful approaches, the authors draw on examples from academic domains, as well as performance fields such as sports and music, to help teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, social workers and counselors, graduate students, and parents develop gifted students' talents.

Abstract: Talented Young Men Overcoming Tough Times features the life stories of five gifted, high-achieving young men who overcame serious adversity in their lives. Their stories, captured through qualitative interviews, help us to better understand the factors that shaped their resilience and enabled them to overcome difficult challenges, including homelessness, poverty, bullying, dysfunctional families, and abuse. The five young men succeeded in overcoming their difficult circumstances in adolescence and met strong success in higher education, obtaining advanced graduate degrees and moving on to productive professional careers.
