In Coaching Education Leaders: A Culturally Responsive Approach to Transforming Schools and Systems, Gutierrez, Jarney and Kim reconceptualize leadership coaching as an equity-centered and relational process designed to foster systemic transformation rather than isolated professional improvement. This review examines the authors’ facilitative competency-based coaching framework and analyzes its contributions to contemporary conversations surrounding culturally responsive leadership, educator identity development, and organizational change. Particular attention is given to the text’s emphasis on reflective practice, relational trust, equity leadership dispositions, and the interconnected nature of coaching across individuals and institutions. The review also explores the authors’ treatment of feedback, dialogue, and authentic leadership spaces, including the metaphorical concept of “the kitchen” as a site of vulnerability and transformational learning. While the book offers a compelling and practitioner-oriented framework for equity-driven coaching, this review critiques the limited empirical grounding supporting the proposed model and questions the sustainability of such approaches within accountability-driven educational systems. Despite these limitations, the text makes a meaningful contribution to educational leadership scholarship by positioning coaching as identity-centered, culturally responsive, and systemically embedded work. The review concludes by suggesting future research directions related to educator identity formation, leadership efficacy, organizational trust, and the long-term impact of culturally responsive coaching practices in diverse educational settings.
