As a critical qualitative methodologist, Lorien interrogates and disrupts the cultural mechanisms of knowledge production and is specifically interested in the contextual and ethical dimensions of methodologies and methods. Her work is published in journals such as Educational Researcher, Cultural Studies <—> Critical Methodologies, Qualitative Inquiry, Qualitative Research, and Qualitative Health Research. She is co-editor of the recent book, Expanding Approaches to Thematic Analysis: Creative Engagements with Qualitative Data and serves as Chair of the American Educational Research Association's Qualitative Research SIG (QR SIG).
