Reseña de Alfabetismo e Atitudes, por Vera Masagâo Ribeiro
Abstract
This book explores the concept of literacy in the city of Sâo Paulo, Brazil. As part of a larger study desgined and directed by a team of OREALC (Organización Regional de Educación para América Latina y el Caribe, UNESCO) researchers, the author of this book centers her work on two themes: 1) what it means to be literate in a city like Sâo Paulo, and what kinds of literacies one may encounter in this environment; and 2) what kinds of relationships are established between literate practices and other social practices. From this perspective, the study presented in this book is useful to understand what are the demands placed on the citizens living in a large Latin-American city, in regards to their literacy abilities. Based on these findings, the book opens challenging questions as to the ways in which literacy is to be considered, not only during the schooling process, but also after graduation, and for life.
