Abstract

This book explores how global education systems adapted to online and hybrid learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The author discusses the concepts of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) and electronic Classroom Interactional Competence (e-CIC) as well as the dynamics of multimodal interaction in digital learning environments encompassing text, voice, visuals, emojis, and other communication channels. Through a mixed-methods approach combining ethnography, conversation analysis, and multimodality, the author examines three primary learning modes asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid along with their respective pedagogical opportunities and challenges. Key findings indicate that the success of online learning is not determined solely by the technological platform, but rather by the quality of pedagogical design, teachers' digital competence, and the ability to construct social presence in virtual spaces. The findings also emphasize institutional readiness gaps and teachers' unpreparedness in facing the sudden digitalization of education. While this volume makes a significant contribution to the field of digital education and foreign language teaching, some of its analytical concepts remain overly broad and require more measurable indicators. Overall, it is relevant for academics, educational researchers, and teaching practitioners seeking to understand the complexity of multimodal interaction in the post-pandemic learning era.

Author Biographies

Robbi Sukmana, Universitas Jambi

Robbi Sukmana is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the mathematics education program at Universitas Jambi, Indonesia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the same institution. Apart from his educational interests, he works as a Treasurer at a state Islamic University in Jambi. His deep passion for mathematics is what truly drives him in this role.

Duano Sapta Nusantara, Universitas Jambi

Duano Sapta Nusantara earned his PhD in mathematics education in 2023 at the Universitas Sriwijaya. He is a lecturer and researcher in mathematics education at Universitas Jambi. His scholarly work focuses on realistic mathematics education, task design in PISA, and design research. He is actively involved in research, academic collaborations, and the development of educational policies and instructional frameworks, with several publications in Hemanages MEJ-Mathematics Education Journal (Scopus Q2), and nationally accredited journals such as Edumatica: Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika and Jurnal Karya Abdi Masyarakat.

Nguyen Tien Da, Hanoi Metropolitan University

Nguyen Tien Da is an expert in the fields of educational science and mathematics, currently working at the Faculty of Education, Hanoi Metropolitan University, as a Lecturer and Deputy Director of the master's program in elementary mathematics methods. He graduated with a PhD in theory and methods of teaching mathematics from the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences in 2024 and possesses extensive experience in teaching and in-depth scientific research on calculus, differential equations, and modern teaching methods such as realistic mathematics education, flipped classroom, and project-based learning. Dr. Tien Da has published a large number of high-quality scientific articles in international and domestic journals and actively participates in research projects and mentors students who have won many high awards in Mathematics Olympiads and student scientific research competitions.

Rohati Rohati, Universitas Jambi

Rohati Rohati earned her PhD in mathematics education in 2023 at the Universitas Pendidikan, Indonesia. She is a senior lecturer in mathematics education at Universitas Jambi, Indonesia. Her academic expertise encompasses mathematics education, educational studies, and educational evaluation. As a Lektor Kepala and Coordinator of the master's program in mathematics education, she actively contributes to teaching, research, and academic leadership. Her research focuses on educational assessment and evaluation, aiming to enhance the quality of mathematics education and instructional practices through research-based approaches and academic collaboration.
