Abstract

In Being in Shadow and Light: Academics in Post/Conflict Higher Education, Editor Dina Zoe Belluigi and contributors shift attention from institutional reconstruction and policy reform toward the lived experiences of academics working in conflict and post-conflict higher education contexts. It explores how academics teach, remember, archive, resist, and produce knowledge under conditions shaped by violence, displacement, censorship, institutional silence, and historical trauma. This review highlights the book’s conceptual contribution through the interpretive framework of shadow and light, its methodological plurality, and its relevance to higher education studies, postcolonial theory, academic freedom, peace and conflict studies, and critical pedagogy. Overall, the book is a significant contribution to understanding academic subjectivity, educational responsibility, and knowledge production in contexts marked by unresolved conflict.
